제가 몇 년 전까지 살던 곳에는 흙이 참 귀했어요.
어디나 보도블록이나 시멘트 콘크리트였죠.
항상 신발을 신고 다녔고 벗어도 흙은 만날 수 없었죠.
The soil was very rare where I lived a few years ago.
Everywhere were sidewalk blocks or cement concrete.
I always wore my shoes and I couldn't meet the soil even if I took them off.
하지만 젊었을 때는 맨발로 흙을 밟는 것을 참 좋아했죠.
계곡에 가면 언제나 신발을 벗고 흙길을 따라 오던 기억이 있습니다.
집 뒤에 공사장 공터에서 비올 때 맨발로 진흙을 밟던 기억을 잊을 수가 없습니다.
But when I was young, I loved stepping on the soil with bare feet.
I remember that when I went to the valley, I always took off my shoes and walked along the dirt road.
I can't forget the memory of stepping on the mud with bare feet when it rained in the construction site behind the house.
몇 년 전 제주도에 갈 일이 있었죠.
오랜 만의 여행이라 이번에는 꼭 맨발로 걸어보리라 생각을 했었어요.
그런데 제주도에도 흙은 없었습니다.
당시 제주도 올레길이 많이 회자되었었습니다.
올레길이라는 단어를 들었을 때 시골 흙이 덮인 오솔길을 상상했었더랬지요.
그런데 제주도 땅도 온통 콘크리트 시멘트 길 밖에 없더군요.
올레길은 그냥 길이라는 의미였어요.
그리고 수목원에도 잔뜩 기대를 하고 갔는데 거기도 흙이 없었습니다.
숲 전체가 나무판으로 깔려 있었죠.
A few years ago, I had to go to Jeju Island.
It's been a long time, so I thought I would walk bare feet at that time.
But there was no soil in Jeju Island.
At that time, Jeju Island Olle Trail was talked about.
When I heard the word Ollegil, I imagined a trail covered with rural soil.
But Jeju Island was covered with concrete cement road mostly.
Olle trail meant just a road.
And I was looking forward to the Arboretum, but there was no soil also.
The entire forest was laid with wooden boards.
정말 당황스러웠습니다.
흙을 느끼고 싶었는데 아쉬웠죠.
산에 올라갔을 때도 마찬가지입니다.
요즈음은 산에 올라가도 대부분 타이어가 바닥에 깔려 있습니다.
사람들이 많이 찾는 숲길을 찾아가도 대부분은 야자매트가 깔려 있습니다.
I was really embarrassed.
I wanted to feel the soil, but it was a pity.
The same is true when I went up the mountain.
Nowadays, tires are all over on the earth even when we go up to the mountains.
Even if you go to the forest path that many people visit, most of them are covered with palm mats.
시골에서도 숲에서도 지금은 흙이 너무너무 희귀한 것이 되었습니다.
그래서 우리는 흙과 분리되었고 흙은 더럽고 불결하고 무섭고 위험한 것이 되었습니다.
물리적으로 멀어지자 마음도 멀어지고 멀어진 마음은 공포와 혐오로 바뀌었지요.
In the countryside, in the forest, the soil is so rare.
So we were separated from the soil and the soil became dirty, unclean, fearful and dangerous.
As I moved away physically from soil, our heart was far away from it and our mind changed to fear and aversion for soil.
하지만 우리 산에는 흙이 희귀하지 않습니다.
사방에 흙이고 흙 위에는 아무 것도 덮지 않아서 나는 흙과 스킨십을 하고 흙을 안을 수 있게 되었습니다.
흙은 더 이상 더러운 것도 두려운 것도 아닙니다.
여기 와서 이 향기롭고 달콤한 흙을 느껴보세요.
But soil is not rare on my mountain.
It's soil everywhere and nothing is covered on the soil, so I can have skinship with soil and hug the soil.
Soil is no longer dirty or fearful.
